How much yarn do I need?
How to read the yarn requirements in a pattern and recalculate when you change size or yarn.
Read the yarn requirements for your size
Most patterns specify the number of balls or grams for each size. Choose your size based on the finished garment measurements, not just your usual size.
Calculate in metres, not balls
When substituting yarn, calculate in metres. Take the number of balls in the pattern × metres per ball of the original yarn. Then divide by the metres per ball of your new yarn and round up.
Buy an extra ball
Dye lots vary between batches. An extra ball from the same dye lot costs less than being unable to finish.
